Dick was born and raised in Indianapolis, and graduated from Hanover College. He then joined the Air Force, where he flew OV-10s in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, then KC-135 refueling tankers all over the Pacific. Hired by American Airlines in 1978, he flew various aircraft in domestic and International divisions, retiring in 2008 as an International Captain. He belongs to various charitable organizations; DHH was a natural fit, with his love of dogs partnering with his interest in veteran affairs.
