Joe and Stewert

Joe and Stewert

From 1994-1998 I had the honor of serving in the United States Marine Corps.I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California, Banger, Washington, and Okinawa, Japan.Shortly after returning home I began working for the Department of Corrections where I have remained for the past seventeen years. In October 2017, after returning home from work, my son found me on the floor after suffering from a stroke.I spent the next 3 weeks in ICU and then another month in Rehab.I continue to heal and work on gaining my strength back, but have not been able to return to work yet.My self-esteem and confidence were waning until the day I met Stewert.

Stewert is a beautiful Silver Lab.He has become my best friend.Stewert and I now go to my wife’s school three days a week where I volunteer in classrooms, read with students, and help the P.E. teacher. He is able to help me with mobility and stability, as well as comforts me in times of need.I am now comfortable attending my sons’ basketball, baseball, and soccer games, going to the movies, and to dinner with my family.Stewert has changed my life and I am forever grateful to Dogs Helping Heroes, as well as to Lora Stewart for organizing the benefit ride that funded Stewert.
