Darren served in the Army and Army National Guard. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was a gunner that did combat patrols and security patrols. He is married to Laura and between them have three children, Thomas, Travis and Jacob. Darren likes to be out in nature and away from all the crowds and noise. Darren likes to hunt and spend time with his family.
He was introduced to Dogs Helping Heroes through the Department of Veterans Affairs because he suffers from many different medical and psychological issues from being in combat. Such as, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Survivors Guilt, and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Through DHH he was paired with a 2 y/o Yellow Lab named Hoss. Hoss was a graduate of Camp K9 with the Humane Society of Oldham County. Hoss was the perfect match and understood Darren’s issues, with the help of Hoss; Darren is overcoming his fears of going out in public. It is a slow process but Darren says he knows things are only going to get better as he continues to train and with time. Darren also feels it is a great honor to have the support of the other heroes affiliated with Dogs Helping Heroes.
